Hey all, this is my first time building a custom gaming rig. I plan to buy all the parts from Newegg, as I hear it's cheap and reliable. Well, here's my specs:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674)
Case: Antec Three Hundred (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042)
Power Supply: Rosewill 600W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182032)
Video Card: GeForce GTX 260 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130433)
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128392)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116677)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320)
Disc Drive: Sony Optiarc Black (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118030)First time building rig, advice appreciated
Also forgot to mention that my budget is around $1000, which is what I have around here. So any advice on any changes/improvements I can make are greatly appreciated. Thanks. First time building rig, advice appreciated
You can go for the i5 750 and the 1156 socket if it is within your budget. It's not much more expensive, and you get one of the best processors for gaming that money can buy. I would personally pick a more reliable PSU company (Rosewill is reliable, but there are better ones) like Corsair, PC power %26 cooling, Antec.
And about the video card, I would actually hold off on getting one until the DX 11 video cards are released later this year. You may find a DX 11 that is affordable and more powerful than the GTX 260 you are picking out right now.
I'd probably get this PSU over the one you listed... mainly because the four 12volt rails are rated for 25amps each. Antec EarthWatt 750 But then again...you do have to pay for it, compared to what you chose.(it would help if those were hotlinks, instead of making us copy and paste.... ;) )Umm.. your ram is the wrong kind... DDR3 motherboard.
Oh sorry bout that, don't know how to make links :( So I need to fix my RAM to support the motherboard and a better brand name power supply? Gonna check out my options now. Thanks.
Also, about the i5, is it worth it compared to the AMD chip I picked out? It's only $20 more on Newegg.

I couldn't tell you that... My builds have all been AMD, myself. I don't even look at Intel, mainly because, they always end up being more expensive to a comparable AMD build.
As for your ram.... I'd probably look into DDR3 1333 type (although for some reason Newegg has 3 sections of DDR3 1333). It would be a good idea to go to the motherboard manufacturer website and try to grab a model that they recommend. But it can be hard because Newegg doesn't stock everything. Also, if you can find some with a low latency, that would be better. 9's tend to be the average, though; but you can find some listed in the 7's or 6's. But then their is price, so... yeah. I don't really want to recommend anything; specific, myself (mainly because it can turn into a lot of work...) Also, make good use out of the user reviews.I was considering these myself after spending days of deciding, but they are out of stock now....

It also goes toe-to-toe with the i7 920 and most of the time consistently beating it on most games due to lack of hyperthreading support. It's truly a great processor for the price. And if you have a microcenter near you, you can pick it up for an incredible price.

Get this power supply/case combo instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.250626. Also get an HD 4890 instead of that 260 GTX because the 4890 performs much better. Rest looks good my friend!

No get the phenom II 955 also get this motherboard instead because the one you listed isn't compatible with DDR2. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128384

Absolutely correct!!
I5, no brainer. It's around the same gaming wise but it beats the phenom II in just about everything else. The price at Microcenter is a steal and cheaper than getting a AMD 965.
