Yes, have each OS on a seperate partition.
When putting the old drive in your new rig make sure you remove the old drivers first.

Basically, drivers are system files that are involved hardware integration into the OS. Basically, when you change the hardware components change, you are going to need to change the drivers. You can do that by going to device manager and selecting uninstall.

I would do it before. Otherwise you may have some issues.

Just put the drive in your new PC, whether you hook it up internally or buy an external enclosure for it. You won't have any problem copying files off of it, but Windows XP will refuse to boot in your new PC - it does not handle complete hardware changes very well. Besides, you suspect it is virus infected, why would you want to attempt to keep using it?I hope you have a virus scanner going in Vista to avoid infecting that, too.

There's no point uninstalling utilities like AV software. You only have to remove the video, sound card and motherboard drivers.

No, it wouldn't boot with the OS on the new drive. When booted to one of the drives you'ld only be using the AV on it's drive, the other drive would act like a data drive.
