Power Supply Amps Question

So I got an EVGA GTX 280 (Superclocked Edition), and it requires at least a 550W PSU. I had my eye on a 700W Thermaltake Toughpower PSU.While doing some further research, I found out that my card needs at least a minimum output of 40 Amps from the +12V rails. In the feature section in the above link, it says that the PSU has a combined loading of 56A. But if you go to the specification section, you will see a table showing that at the +12V we have an Output Current Max of 18A.Will this be enough for my VGA? And what should I look at? Actually that psu has four 12v rails 18 a peice which means 72A combined total. It a very good psu, but it depends on the cost too.Power Supply Amps Question

Actually I got a very good price on that Thermaltake PSU. The thing is, each pin from the latter provides 18A. So when I plug the 6-and 8-pin connectors, wouldn't I be providing my VGA with only 36A? So we would be a bit short on the juice, no?

Keep in mind that your CPU and motherboard will also be drawing from the 12 volt rails as well.

No, that not how it works. One the 12v rail provides the power to motherboard and the rest of the 12v Amperes gets used by the other parts. Pci-e power cables provide the wattage needed to the card or other parts inside the Pc .
Thanks for the much helpful input 04dcarraher, so do you recommend I buy the Thermaltake 700W PSU with my eyes closed? So there's plenty of juice it can provide...

If your getting a good deal for it the get it. If its under $160 then go for it.

The combined or the single output?[/QUOTE]That PSU will be enough for your setup, and also you wanna look at the combined Amps on all 12V rails together.I would recommend this modular Kingwin Mach 1 power supply, it has 4x 12V rails totalling 74Amps, 700W, total output is 750W, very reliable and never had an issue with it, and I've owned it for quite some time now. And it's only about $99.

And it's only about $99.[/QUOTE] Just FYI, that Kingwin PSU only has 50a (600w) on the 12v rails. Not bad for a 700w unit, but if it were to have 74a, then it could push 888w. and that's just not gonna happen with a 700w unit.
