Defragment HD

Is it necessary after you install a game like Crysis?:(Defragment HD
It's not necessary. I would do it only after the drive gets pretty fragmented and performance is impacted because of it.Defragment HD

I hope your joking too. A Defrag should only be done when a drive is fragmented. Windows will allow you to analyze the drive before you defrag so you can tell if it's fragmented. You can actually decrease the longevity of your hard drive by defragmenting it too much. Fragmentation does not occur by simply installing a large program. It occurs when you Delete and create many different files of many different sizes many times. That is what causes fragmentation. fragmentation will occur more often when you delete a large program than when you install one.

If you don't defrag it makes your hard drive do more work in the first place, so if you defrag everyday the defrag is less than 10 minutes. I defrag everyday, and set my server up to do as well.

Windows works, diskeepr is probably the best but it isn't free. WIndows is very quick if you defrag everyday.
Defraggler is pretty good as well. It's by the same peeps that make CCleaner. I defraged my PC once a month. No more, no less. But now that I have SSD's, I don't defrag anymore as I heard defrag damages SSD's.
Not just the defraggler, here's are some defragmenter softwares: Auslogics Disk Defrag and Smart Defrag but i'm keep using Auslogics Disk Defrag.
Note that if you have Vista or above, a weekly defragment is alreay enabled by default.A daily defragment is overdoing it, unless you install and remove programs every day.
yea by default in vista it schedules a weekly defragbut i think it's totally fine to also do a manual defrag after you install a program/game with many files

it's a good idea to do both, imo.



windows defrag is fine. you don't even need another program to do it. even with vista you can run defrag from the command line and it force windows to defrag. you can also tell it do a full defrag instead of the default partial defrag. i made a .bat file that gives me these options in a menu and i just pick what i want and it does it. works great.
