Upgrading videocard from 8800GT

I currently have a XFX nvidia8800GT 512MB card in my current rig. Mobo is Evga680isli A1. I plan on building a new Rig eventually and use my current one as a HTPC, so my question is what would be a good card to buy for now to use for gaming that will give me better performance than the current one i have now? Budget it $400 but it could be a little more or less. I want to be able to use this new card on the new rig i am going to build in a few months. suggestions..comments? ThanksUpgrading videocard from 8800GT
Hmm, I have a 8800 GT myself, and it's working so nicely I'm not planning on replacing it till late 2009 to early 2010. I'm currently looking at maybe a Radeon HD 4890, but I haven't looked very hard - my 8800 GT is just working so well for me. I haven't looked at the reqs for games I buy in nearly 3 years now.Upgrading videocard from 8800GT
What the other specs of you system?

hd 4870 would be the cheapest option

4GB of RAM believe its crucial, CPU is a C2D E6750 PSU is 800W Gamextreme OCZ. Inside a Antec 900, new case i want is THE 1200. Also two Dvd RW drivers and a bluray drive..
I don't think it's worth retiring the 8800 GT just yet.

Not until the DX11 cards are out, anyway.
wait for dx11. if you have an SLI board just get another 8800gt for now.
Ya wait for DX11 they are due in a few months. Anything over a 8800gt is unnecessary. Only reason I would suggest something better is if they were building a new rig, and since the new cards are close I would still tell them to wait.

would i be better off getting two 9800GT cards? They are cheaper than the 8800gt I have

Are you hurting for an upgrade that bad? You can still find new 8800GT's online for less than $100, if you absolutely must have an upgrade, I'd find one.

I have the 8800gt alpha dog edition 512MB, its an XFX card will i have issues due to manufacture differences? trying to use these in SLI, you seem like you know what your doing just from ur specs lol

I totally agree on that. 8800GT performs really well currently and he already had 512MB ram with it. I am waiting for DX11 as well. DX11 cards do GPGPU, which I hope MS will treat it as another CPU to help out applications. And DX11 cards can do ray tracing, not sure how fast the card can do it, but it is worth checking it out.

You wont have an issue SLI'ing two different brands.

Brand doesn't matter at all, but the cards WILL default to the slowest speed of either card. You can overclock them after you get them up and running however.

Umm...what? Current cards are perfectly capable of being GPGPU's, the codes and applications just aren't there yet. And current cards can also do ray-tracing, it's just far too demanding for current (and to be quite honest, any near future) hardware to do in real-time, at least while it looks decent. There have been ray-tracing projects done for Quake III and 4, and while they do look great, but they were programmed for a CPU, not GPU. Again, the problem mainly lies in the coding, not the hardware itself.

Yes, that's why we need DX11 and DX11 cards. With that, there is a default interface of coding, thus, developer will build games and apps on that. And ideally Windows should just treat DX11 cards as another CPU using DX11 interface, then woot woot, more CPU to run applications. Or at least make a toggle button to enable such feature when not playing games. This is all done on top of DX11 interface.
Unless you want to play games at the highest settings, you won't need to upgrade that card for quite some time, with the way the consoles are going there won't be a new until maybe around 2012, the current consloles have already reached their limit so as long as they remain dominant pc graphics will not advance.
